Anglo Saxon Invasion.


Writers at the time suggested the following reasons why the Angles, Jutes and Saxons invaded England.

Source 1.
(Written by a British monk, Gildas, in 550 A.D.)
Then the proud dictator Gurthrigerm (Vortigern, King of Kent) and his advisers were so blind that to protect their country they sealed its doom. They invited (like wolves into the sheep fold) the fierce and ungodly Saxons, a race that both God and men hated, to drive back the attacks of the northern tribes.
He wrote his book called The Ruin of Britain to show that the British failure to worship Jesus Christ caused their disasters

(Written by a British monk, Bede in 730 A.D.))
Whereupon a larger fleet came over quickly with a great body of warriors, which, when joined to the first troops, made an unbeatable army. They received from the Britons pay, and gifts of land where they could settle, on condition that they kept the island safe and peaceful
Bede lived in Northumberland. His book was called a History of the English Church.

The Anglo-Saxons were victorious everywhere. They told the Angli how useless were the Britons, and that their land was very rich, and asked them to send over more men to join them.

5. Explain what a push factor is. (1 mark)
6. Explain what a pull factor is. (1 mark)

In your pairs you thought about other reasons which might explain why the Anglo Saxons invaded - reasons for migration.
Some reasons are push factors, some are pull factors.

7. Make two different lists:-
Push factors (5 marks)
Pull factors (5 marks).

Try and make sure you explain exactly what each factor means. Its no good just writing the word ‘weather’ or the word ‘resources’, for example, unless you say what you mean.
