Themes in History: Russian dictatorship 1856-1956


This theme focuses on the nature of the Russian government and its impact on the Russian people and society.

• You will need to understand the similarities and differences between the autocratic rule of the Tsars up until 1917 and the Communist dictatorship established in that year.

• You will also be expected to have an understanding of the causes and consequences of the 1917 Revolutions but not a detailed knowledge of the events of the year

Content
You’ll be looking at these in detail:
• The development of the Tsarist autocracy to 1917, the impact of reforms and reactionary policies, the causes of the 1917 revolutions
• The growth of opposition; its extent and effectiveness both before and after 1917
• The development of a communist dictatorship from 1917; the reasons for the development of a totalitarian regime
• The impact of the dictatorial nature of government on the economy and society if the Russian empire and the USSR
You will be expected to know the main developments and turning points in this one hundred year period with the focus being on government/politics, the economy and the people of Russia.

The exam
Will be one and a half hours long and consist of two essay questions. You will need to use knowledge of the whole one hundred year period
