On Wednesday 9th March 2005 the History staff and boys
in the Third Year went to The Hexagon Theatre in Reading to see a production
of Journey's End.
First performed in 1929, R.C. Sherriff’s great anti-war classic,
Journey's End is set in the British Trenches at St Quentin, and is based
on the author's own experiences of the Front.
THE PLOT:
Raleigh, a new eighteen-year-old officer fresh
out of English public school, joins the besieged company of his friend
and cricketing hero Stanhope, but finds that Stanhope, promoted beyond
his years and experience and facing the realities of the front line
has dramatically changed.
The play proved to be a very powerful experience, capturing the strained
humour, anger and frustration of the men caught between the mundane
daily routine in the trenches and the horror and fear of assaults and
sorties behind enemy lines.
